"Julia had a wonderful experience at Summer Days Math and Science Camp for Girls this past week at Washington College. Julia didn't stop talking from the time she was picked up until the time she went to bed about the instructors, other girls she met, the wonderful food selection in the cafeteria and the college dorm life."Read More Testimonials
This year you can choose from one of two sessions at Washington College. Located on Maryland's Eastern Shore, it is an ideal setting to discover how math and science can be a strong influence in your life. You will be given permission to experiment, be inquisitive and take home a load of good feelings, friends, and experiences.
At this year's camps, you'll begin to consider various paths and destinations your life may reach and begin to acquire what you'll need to get there! You will look at bridging the gap between what is perceived and what is real, and create a stronger sense of yourself. With careful planning and design, you'll come away with a well defined purpose for your math and science studies.
You will spend half of a day aboard a traditional Chesapeake workboat, learning about Bay ecology. This class takes a hands-on approach to understanding the wonders of the Chesapeake Bay. Summer Days students will catch and examine plankton, fish, and anything else that might come up in the net in order to learn about the Bay. Then, under the guidance of experienced instructors, you will challenge yourself on the Echo Hill Adventure Course. Through physical and mental problem solving activities, you will experience situations which demand cooperation, communication, and imagination.
Here at Summer Days Math and Science Camp for Girls we place a strong emphasize on leadership. Through discussions and activities, you'll explore the decisions that you face as girls and then as young women. You will be given the chance to look at the messages from your friends and the media and talk about how we define our own worth. By learning about female leaders in math and science, you'll learn not to apologize for being smart. You'll learn to stand tall in situations where you feel most afraid to show up.
You won't be sitting around doing school work by yourself. You'll be working in groups with top mathematicians and scientists doing hands-on problems from their area of expertise. Special projects during the week may include going on a real archeology dig, solving a crime, or decoding a secret message from another country.
You have two weeks to choose from at beautiful Washington College—students will stay in air-conditioned dormitories and use computing centers, athletic facilities, and the pool. Washington College is a private, selective, liberal arts and sciences college located in downtown Chestertown, Maryland. More than 100 acres and historic buildings make up this beautiful campus near the Chester River.
Through informal discussions and workshops, students have a chance to think about possibilities for the future. Faculty and other community professionals provide insights about higher education and beyond, helping to open their eyes to women's issues and their minds to dreaming about what is possible for them as women in the fields of math and science.
Visits with professionals working in the community provide an excellent opportunity to observe the real-life application of science and math. There is nothing like experiencing career choices first hand to help clarify one's own goals. Students will meet with women working in such areas as engineering, finance, and sports medicine, and learn more about careers in these fields by asking questions and observing the work environment.
